Mike Patton is, and has always been, a curious individual. He has played with all sorts of bands, the three most prominent being Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, and Fantômas, with material ranging from relatively straightforward alternative rock, to avant-garde metal, to spine-chilling dark ambient. Mondo Cane however, consists entirely of covers of Italian pop songs, performed by Patton and a large orchestra. Needless to say, it's a fantastic effort, with Patton's flawless vocal delivery and fluent Italian accompanied perfectly by the orchestra. The songs themselves are all excellent choices, ranging from melancholic ballads to high-energy dance numbers. Of course, the album contains plenty of Patton's typical vocal bombast, but does a good job of shedding new light on the man's remarkable talents.
